Meet David. He stopped by my table and asked if I had written these books. He shared that he was a writer of fiction and asked if I wanted to read some of his work. I did. He’s really talented. And a good writer. I told him so. It’s rare that I feel an instant need to take flight from someone’s presence. I was looking down at my ipad when David approached. He must’ve been standing at my table for a few heartbeats before his question about my authorship got my attention. He had the look of someone who was ready to leap, jump, attack, end it all. For the second time since being in AZ, I had to remind myself it’s an open carry state. Black Women are targets for brutal violence because people think they can get away with their worst. These thoughts crossed my mind from my first look at David. Then he started sharing. His girlfriend had broken up with him, his best friend moved in with him and attacked him. He was the only child but his parents never wanted him. He denied being an addict but admitted to being in and out of psychiatric care facilities since the age of 11. He asked if I had time to listen to him. I said yes, without really thinking. He sat on the curb across the table from and dove deeper into his pain and sadness, disappointment and loneliness. The hope of a life with a woman he had known for five months and how her departure put him in a tailspin. He kept saying, “My life makes for good writing.” I kept telling him how sorry I was for the pain, rejection and loneliness he’s experienced since childhood. And adamantly insisted he find someone with good words to pour into him to speak to. He left when someone else approached my table. From that moment to now, I wish I would have gotten up and given him a hug. I’m sharing because fear can be an early warning system. Yes, instincts should be heeded, but sometimes our fear is a barrier that keeps us from sharing our best selves with someone in desperate need of a simple word that’s not intended to harm them. I’m receiving so many lessons, revelations and confirmations lately I really can’t keep up with any type of understanding. 🙌🏾🤲🏾🙌🏾 The arc of life is interesting. For the majority of my life, I poured my heart, soul, spirit, mind and resources into people, jobs and ideals. When life stripped me of all the people and things I was willing to sacrifice for, I learned to view my own existence differently. Where before I had hoped someone would choose to show up for me, stand with me and speak in my defense, I had to learn repeatedly that my interests are of interest to no one else. It has always been a hard lesson, but it has finally been embedded. Additionally, everything I learned through sacrificing for others (i.e. putting others before myself), has girded me with amazing confidence, wisdom, insight, and determination. Add all that to the boldness to show up for my own interests and the things that interest me, the strength to stand and the directness of my speech... well, I can honestly say, nobody’s ready for me. And that’s fine, because I’m done waiting for readiness.
